Reminder: Lulav and Etrog Orders are due this Friday, September 3. No late orders will be accepted. Your set will be ready for pick up on Tuesday 9/21 and Wednesday 9/22 during office hours.

Bat Mitzvah of Ariana Sedighpour: Saturday, September 4, 9 am. Albert Sedighpour and Hilda Balakhane invite you to join their family as they celebrate the Bat Mitzvah of their daughter, Ariana, at Congregation Sinai. Kiddush luncheon, hosted by the Sedighpour-Balakhane family will follow the service. Please join Ariana and her family for this wonderful simcha. All are encouraged to attend.
 
Torah for Tots: Saturday, September 4, 11 am - 12 pm in the Nursery School.  
 
Arvit (Evening Service) and Movie followed by discussion: Saturday, September 4, 8:15 pm in the Social Hall. Following Havdallah, we will watch the movie  Stranger Than Fiction, starring Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The film is about an IRS auditor who suddenly finds himself the subject of narration only he can hear: narration that begins to affect his entire life, from his work, to his love-interest, to his death. Following the movie, Rabbi Berkenwald will lead a discussion on themes raised in the movie. Dessert will be served. Followed by Selichot services.

Selichot Service: Saturday, September 4, 10:45 pm in the Sanctuary. The month of Elul is a time of repentance in preparation for the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The Selichot service includes prayers of repentance and atonement meant to inspire self-examination, confession, pardon and renewal.
  
Sunday Minyan: Sunday, September 5, 9 am in the Mirkin Chapel. Help us to support our mourners in the mitzvah of saying Kaddish, or just take some time to meditate or pray. 
 
Nursery School and Office Closed in observance of Labor Day: Monday, September 6.

*A High Holiday ticket was sent to each member of our synagogue. Please remember to bring your ticket to all services. School age children do not need tickets.You will be asked to show your ticket as you enter the Synagogue through the outside gate.  We do this for the safety of all participants.
  
*Torah for Tots for ages 2 to 5 will take place in the Social Hall from 10:30 -11:30 am on both days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This delightful children's service is designed specifically for nursery school age children.
 
*A Family Service, geared for parents and their children in grade K-5 and led by educator Aviv Monarch, will provide an opportunity to experience the High Holidays together in a meaningful way. We will gather together on both days of Rosh Hashanah, and on Yom Kippur in the Mirkin Chapel from 10:00-11:30 am to pray together and have thoughtful family discussions. 
 
* Babysitting services are available for younger children from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on both days of Rosh Hashana and on Yom Kippur in the Nursery School. Children must be pre-registered to participate in the childcare program. 
 
*On both days of Rosh Hashana, a light kiddush will be provided for families and children participating in the Family Service.  Snacks will also be provided for children in the care of the babysitters on both days of Rosh Hashana and on Yom Kippur. 
 
*A interactive and engaging teen discussion led and organized by our Education Director Kate Mueller will be held from 11:45 am to 12:45 pm on Yom Kippur after the Rabbi's sermon.
 
*It is requested that all children and teenagers are either in the sanctuary with their parents or participating in the appropriate age groups' organized services. We ask that parents make sure that their children are either in the main sanctuary, at Torah for Tots, Family Service, or in childcare. Children may play in the playground or in the play room with adult supervision.
 
*Sinai will be hosting a High Holiday Food Drive. Please bring home a paper bag from Rosh Hashana Services and bring it back full of nutritious, nonperishable food items at the Kol Nidrei Service.
 
*As a courtesy to congregants fasting on Yom Kippur, please refrain from eating or serving your children food on Yom Kippur in common areas such as hallways and the central courtyard.  You are welcome to feed your young child in the social hall.
 
*Yom Kippur Afternoon Study Break. A participatory learning experience with Rabbi Berkenwald will take place in the Social Hall on Saturday, September 18 from 4-5 pm. This session will feature an engaging discussion on the ways in which mitzvoth shape our lives - whether or not we know it. 
 
*Mass Blast and Glow in the Dark Havdallah: At the end of the final service of Yom Kippur, Ne'ilah, anyone with a shofar is invited to join in the Mass Blast. Afterwards, children of all ages will be given glow sticks and invited to the bimah to help lead the Havdallah service that ends the holiday.
 
*Congregation Sinai offers a delicious dairy buffet catered and sponsored by Gunther's Restaurant and Catering for Break-the-Fast immediately following Yom Kippur Ne'ilah service on Saturday, September 18. Cost: $10 per person. Children 5 and under are free. If you are interested in attending, please submit your request and payment to the Sinai office by Tuesday, September 14. Reservations are required. We hope that you can join us.

Kabbalat Shabbat and Shabbat Dinner in the Sukkah: Friday, October 17, Services at 6 p.m. Dinner at 7 pm. Join us for a spirited service followed by a delicious Shabbat dinner in honor of Shabbat and Sukkot. Advanced reservations and payment are required for dinner. $20.00 per adult (age 13 and up) and $5.00 per child age 5-12 (free for children under age 5). $54.00 maximum per family. For reservations, contact the Sinai office at 408-264-8542.  Spaces are extremely limited due to the size of the Sukkah. RSVP early.
 
USY sleepover at Sinai for all teens: Saturday, September 28 at 8 pm.  
 
Religious School "Welcome Back Breakfast in the Sukkah": Parents are invited to join students for a Welcome Back Breakfast and Family Learning on Sunday, September 26 from 9 to 10 am in the Sinai Sukkah.
 

Introducing Congregation Sinai's new program Jr. Kadima: Sunday, September 26 from 12-2 pm. If you are a Jewish 5th or 6th graders or know someone who is, come to our first Jr. Kadima Pizza and ice cream party in the Sukkah.  
  
Sukkah Hop: Sunday, September 26 from 3 to 6 pm. Progressive dinner. Meet at the synagogue, get a map, and join the caravan for a tour of Sinai members' Sukkot.

Jewish Community Center of Los Gatos new Class Offering -
"Well Versed: For Women Only". Well Versed offers a luxurious exploration of selected texts from the Hebrew Bible that will deepen knowledge of the text and allow appreciation of the complex interplay between biblical stories and Western culture. In an intimate salon-type setting, Well Versed women engage in a close reading of biblical passages and relate them to contemporary literature, classical paintings, film clips or another art forms that share parallel themes.
No prior experience with Bible or text study is necessary, knowledge of Hebrew is not required and there is no at-home preparation.  Bring a curious mind, a playful attitude, and an openness to a variety of interpretations.   This group is for women from all backgrounds who have the desire to learn with and from others in a warm and welcoming environment.
