Meet Rabbi Berkenwald Print

Rabbi Berkenwald joined Congregation Sinai with his family in July 2007 after graduating from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. In addition to his studies, Rabbi Berkenwald spent time during Rabbinical School as a Rabbinic Fellow at Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale, a student Rabbi for a variety of Jewish communities, a chaplain intern for hospitals and nursing homes, and a participant in an American Jewish World Service mission to El Salvador. He also underwent training as a Chaplain in the US Navy.

Rabbi Berkenwald was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in Mercer Island, Washington. He earned a BA from the University of Virginia, which included a year of study in Jerusalem. After graduation, Rabbi Berkenwald moved back to Seattle to spend some time considering his plan to become a Rabbi. Consequently, he spent one year processing lab samples for a clinical drug research center and a second year working as a clerk at Solomon Smith Barney, an investment banking firm. After this worldly experience, he was ready to commit to becoming a Rabbi. He moved to Vancouver to woo his future wife, Dana, spending two years working as the youth director at Congregation Beth Israel.
