Fund Descriptions

GENERAL FUND - Supports the operating expenses of the synagogue. The funds are unrestricted and can be used wherever the need is the greatest. This flexibility is important as we try to close the gap between dues revenues and our expenses. From salaries to postage, from Kiddush lunch expenses to paying the electric bill, General Fund donations help keep Sinai running smoothly!

KIDDUSH FUND - Covers part of the cost of non-sponsored Kiddush lunches on Saturdays after Shabbat services, and holiday refreshments throughout the year. To sponsor an entire Kiddush Lunch, please contact Joelle Pluemer in the Sinai office, at 408-264-8542.

CHESED FUND - Covers the cost of meals prepared in the Sinai kitchen for members in need of that extra help, due to their health difficulties, mourning the passing of a loved one, welcoming a new baby, or other challenges.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL FUND - Provides support for Religious School programs. Like most synagogues, we subsidize the costs of educating our children so tuition will be as affordable as possible. This fund, established in memory of Sol & Charlotte Ellner, helps us underwrite the expense of providing a Jewish after-school education for students who attend secular schools, and a B'nei Mitzvah education for all students.

NURSERY SCHOOL FUND  -  While tuition provides the main source of revenue for our wonderful preschool program, donations to this fund make it possible to further enrich our children’s experiences. They help to fund special projects and programs for the youngest members of our community.

USY SCHOLARSHIP FUND - The USY/Camp Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Sinai youth who would like to attend Camp Ramah camps and programs and the USY International Convention but find the high cost prohibative. This fund supports immersive Jewish experiences for our youth in Conservative-oriented programs which are, for example, Shabbat and Kashrut observant. Applications are online and confidentially mailed via USPS to the Scholarship Committee, which is required to maintain the privacy of all applicants.

PRAYERBOOK FUND - Covers part of the cost of purchasing new siddurim (prayerbooks) and chumashim (books containing the Torah and Haftarah readings) to replace those that are damaged or to add more that are needed. To donate and dedicate an entire siddur or chumash, please use this online form or call the Sinai office at 408-264-8542.

BUILDING FUND - Provides funds for significant major repairs or upgrades, such as roof repairs, major plumbing issues, etc.

SYNAGOGUE BEAUTIFICATION FUND - Used for projects that improve the appearance and functionality of our outdoor spaces. This fund was established in memory of Roy Uffer, a dedicated and active member of Sinai who took special delight in helping look after our grounds to be sure they looked their best.

CAMPUS SECURITY FUND - Provides for security enhancements and for a security presence on Shabbat.

RABBI'S DISCRETIONARY FUND - Allows Rabbi Berkenwald to make confidential, charitable allocations to individuals, as well as provide for educational and communal needs he cosiders beneficial to the congregation. Donations are deposited in a special, separate account. While the property of Congregation Sinai, they are used solely at the discretion of the rabbi. They are not used for the personal or professional benefit of the rabbi.
