Feeding the hungry (Ma’achil Re’evim).
The next 7th-grade B'nei Mitzvah program is on Sunday, January 22, 10 am - 12:30 pm. The program will begin and end at Sinai. Religious School students will have class with Ilona from 9 - 10 am.
This month's topic is Ma'achil Re'evim (feeding the hungry). Students will learn about food scarcity, kashrut, and some derech eretz (practical knowledge). They will be given profiles of people facing food scarcity. They will then have to prepare a shopping list and shop for the people in their profile. The 7th graders will go to the grocery store together. This is a really fun and important activity (for the students and the adults accompanying them). Food will then be delivered to JFS.
The Mission of our 7th Grade B’nei Mitzvah Program is for students to learn what it means to be an adult in the Jewish community through study, hands-on activities, family projects, and multi-generational interactions. Students will learn about key Jewish values, mitzvot, and rituals. Monthly activities will explore Jewish approaches to tzedakah, homelessness, hunger, the environment, as well as ritual themes like kashrut and tzitzit.
